Workers Party’s Leon Perera claimed the amendments were not shared with the voters before GE 2015 but in fact, the amendments were sought after GE 2015 in Feb 2016!
He also claimed the amendments were also not approved by public referendum but the Constitution Commission went through an extensive public consultation before the amendments were made!
The Constitutional Commission went through an extensive process to solicit views from the public on possible changes to the Elected Presidency Scheme. It received over 100 written submissions from the public, and conducted four public hearings over the course of April to May 2016. During these hearings, the Commission heard oral submissions from 19 groups, including students, academics, professionals, NGOs and senior public figures. These discussions were extensively covered by the media. On 7 September, the report was released by the Government.A nine-member Constitutional Commission, led by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, was appointed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in February 2016 to review specific aspects of the Elected Presidency.
