Wake Up Singapore wants to have more libraries and arts facilities instead of shopping malls in Singapore.
Let’s be realistic here. We already have 13 libraries in various shopping centres. Not counting those standalone ones. We also have quite a few arts facilities dotted around the island. Why would the Govt built more libraries or art facilities instead of shopping centres just to cater for a niche group of people instead. And deprive majority who loves to shop, eat and chill at shopping centres? Does it even make sense?
As at 2016, the National Library Board (NLB) has 13 libraries located in shopping centres.1 This strategy aimed to bring the library closer to the people and encourage life-long learning among Singaporeans. The first shopping mall library, Jurong West Community Library, was opened on 22 March 1996 in Jurong Point.
